STEAM education based on engineering researches by cooperating with industries

Science and technology are becoming more diversified and interdisciplinary, recently. In order to respond to the changes, it is necessary to promote STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) education for the next generation. If students study each subject of STEAM, it is also important for them to understand the social roles and significance of science and technology. Office for the Next Generation (ONG), Institute of Industrial Science (IIS), the University of Tokyo has been developing new educational models in order to promote STEAM education.

The ONG organizes various programs such as visiting lectures and workshops based on engineering researches at IIS by cooperating with industries. We have also developed ten visual teaching materials based on our activities, and have provided as DVDs and YouTube videos. As a result, the students were able to understand the social aspects of science and technology as well as school-level science and mathematics through our STEAM educational activities. In this seminar, I would like to introduce our activities and discuss STEAM education.
