Hello. My name is Rizca Hikmah Hijria but my friends call me Chika. I am 21 years old and come from Indonesia. I came to Komaba, UTokyo in order to join the AIKOM Program. My home university is Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. I am now a fourth year student majoring in International Relations. My studies focus on East Asia and topics in Political Economy.

What attracted you to Komaba, UTokyo?
Being a part of one of the best universities in the world was one of my dreams, and it came true. Why did I choose Komaba, UTokyo? Basically because of my interest in Japan. I really wanted to experience the life of a student in Japan and also to experience the culture directly. Here in Komaba, I felt like I could have both experiences and because of that, I was attracted to Komaba, UTokyo.

Describe the friendships and connections you’ve made at Komaba, UTokyo.
Don’t worry about making friends here! Japanese people are so nice, and with the help of the Globalization Office, we can easily make friends with Japanese people and other foreigners. They are all so open and humble, which makes me really comfortable living here in Japan. I can ask them anything regarding life inside or even outside school, and they really help a lot. Furthermore, we can also talk with them about anything so I feel like I have a new family here in Komaba, UTokyo!

If you could give one piece of advice to a new international student or researcher, what would it be?
Don’t be shy and make as many friends as you can! Build relationships and enjoy your journey here in Komaba, UTokyo.

Any stories you would like to share about being an international student or researcher at Komaba, UTokyo?
It is really an amazing experience for me to be a part of the Komaba Campus, UTokyo, even if it’s only for a year. With the help of the international offices on campus, I have been able to adapt to the new environment, make new friends and relationships, and also experience Japanese culture. It has been great. The Globalization Office provides all the things we need inside and outside campus. They provide free events to experience Japanese culture (e.g. rakugo and bunraku events, trips), and arrange meetings with GO tutors to have chats regarding our lives here, and provide many other opportunities. Komaba, UTokyo is a really nice environment in which to study and live!
