In the Pursuit of Culture, History and Architecture in Central Europe, Hungary | 文I・1年

We have much opportunity to enjoy programs with Hungarian students, and the experience developed me in some respects. Of course, I learned a lot from the lectures, but I think I learned more from them directly or indirectly.

I could see partly what Hungary is actually like through them. Compared with Japan, I found similarities as well as difference. Hungarian students were full of hospitality, hardworking, and were a little bit shy. For my impression they seem to be similar to Japanese more than to American. I found it interesting that Japanese and Hungarian share some part of childhood; they watched Japanese anime, and read Japanese manga. Japanese culture has bigger influence than I expect. It was an opportunity to appreciate Japanese culture again. I think the biggest difference is that Hungary is exposed to other country. I understood immigration was actually big issue to them by active debate about it in a lecture. I get new perspective and I come to be able to think of the issue as a familiar one. That is why I am interested in immigration and discuss it in my essay. I used not to pay attention to immigration problem though there has been discussion whether accepting immigrants is a good solution to decreasing population.

I learned the joy of trying to communicating with people from different culture. I found that my English is poor is not such a big problem when I go abroad and make friends with those who live there. It was my first time to have communication with non-native speaker in English. I think international communication is similar to this since there are more non-native speakers of English than native speaker in the world. I realized I should be more careful to what I seem from others. When I talk with Japanese people, I mainly pay attention to what I say. However, when talking with people in different culture, the way of talking and considering the context should be important. Information other than what is said also has an important role. It was not so difficult thing if I really wanted to communicate. On the contrary, I got confident in talking with foreign people. The next step should be keeping improving my English.

I got motivation to study harder from the hardworking students. I was impressed that some of them had prepared for the presentation beforehand. Notebooks some students showed me which is for studying Japanese were also impressive. All students are very willing to learn and understand different culture. I thought I have to work harder and more actively. I had some opportunities to talk about dreams in the future with them, and it encouraged me to develop myself even after I am back to Japan.
