Application Information for MEXT Scholarship Applicants
(Embassy Recommendation, including 中国赴日本国留学生)
Research Students, 2026 Entry

1.Status of Enrollment
Students accepted as MEXT scholars are initially granted the status of “research student” (non-degree).
To enroll in a regular degree course (Master’s or Doctoral), applicants must separately pass the graduate school entrance examination.

2.Selection of Academic Advisor and Department
Please choose one prospective academic advisor by referring to the following resources:
Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the University of Tokyo(Programs and Courses)
research map(Database of researches and research topics)

You may select your desired department based on the affiliation of your prospective academic advisor. The available departments include four in the humanities and one in the sciences (the science department consists of three divisions):  
Note: The following graduate programs do not accept non-degree research students and therefore you cannot request a Letter of Provisional Acceptance from them.  
If you wish to pursue one of these programs as a regular student, please apply through the department your prospective advisor belongs to, not the program itself. However, depending on the advisor’s affiliation or status, prior coordination may be necessary. In such cases, please make sure to contact us in advance. 
 
3.Required Documents
1) Documents for Acceptance Application
① APPLICATION FOR PROVISIONAL ACCEPTANCE (designated form of the Graduate School)
② Passing Certificate of the First Screening issued by the Embassy
 
2) Documents submitted to the embassy (returned with confirmation stamp, except in certain cases)
① Application Form
② Field of Study and Research Plan
③ Academic transcript from the university attended
*If you have completed or are enrolled in graduate school, submit both undergraduate and graduate transcripts.
④ Certificate of graduation or degree certificate from the university attended
*If you have completed or are enrolled in graduate school, submit both undergraduate and graduate certificates.
⑤ Recommendation letter from the president/dean or the academic advisor at the current or last university attended
⑥ Medical Certificate
⑦ Abstract of Thesis (only if submitted to the Embassy)
⑧ Certificate of language proficiency (only if submitted to the Embassy)
⑨ Recommendation letter from the present employer (only if submitted to the Embassy)
 
4.How to Submit
Please submit the documents listed in 1) and 2) above as two separate PDF files, named as follows:

5.Deadline
Must arrive by Monday, September 1, 2025.
Late submissions will not be accepted.

6.Notes
-Screening results will be notified by Monday, September 22, 2025 (JST).
-The Letter of Provisional Acceptance will be issued by the head of the department.
-You cannot change your department or advisor after submitting your application.
-Inquiries regarding the screening results before the official announcement will not be answered.
-Additional documents may be requested by the department or course.
