MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports Science & Technology in Japan) Scholarship Students

The following information is intended for prospective international students wishing to attend Graduate School of Arts and Sciences as a MEXT Scholar.

Students accepted as MEXT scholars are initially granted the status of “research student” (non-degree).
To enroll in a regular degree course (Master’s or Doctoral), applicants must separately pass the graduate school entrance examination.


 

Embassy Recommendation

Applications for this category are made directly through Japanese embassies or consular offices outside Japan.

If you have passed the First Screening conducted by the Japanese diplomatic mission in your home country and wish to be accepted as a MEXT Scholarship Student at Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, please apply for the acceptance following steps below:

University Recommendation

For this category, UTokyo selects and recommends research students directly to MEXT as candidates for the Japanese government scholarship.

In principle, applicants are required to have been officially recommended by the partner university based on inter-university student exchange agreements.

Recommendation and application will be made by the faculty member who will accept the student.

Before contacting a faculty member, please first carefully read the guidelines and notes from MEXT, and also contact International Student Section to confirm whether you meet the requirements.
