MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports Science & Technology in Japan) Scholarship Students

The following information is intended for prospective international students wishing to attend Graduate School of Arts and Sciences as a MEXT Scholar.

Students accepted as MEXT scholars are initially granted the status of “research student” (non-degree).
To enroll in a regular degree course (Master’s or Doctoral), applicants must separately pass the graduate school entrance examination.

Embassy Recommendation

Applications for this category are made directly through Japanese embassies or consular offices outside Japan.

University Recommendation

There are two categories under the MEXT Scholarship University Recommendation scheme: the “Special Program Category” and the “General Category.” In both cases, the University selects and recommends candidates to MEXT. The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences does not accept applications directly from students.

<Special Program Category>
Under this category, MEXT scholarship slots are allocated to specific educational and research programs designated by MEXT.
At the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Graduate Program on Environmental Sciences (GPES) has been approved as a program designated for priority placement of MEXT Scholars and has been allocated recommendation slots for students enrolling in the autumn semesters from AY2026 through AY2028.

Candidates are selected by the University, and eligible admitted applicants will be contacted individually.

<General Category>
Under this category, the University of Tokyo selects candidates and recommends them to MEXT based on the number of scholarship slots allocated to the University by MEXT.
At the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, candidates recommended by faculty members are considered through an internal selection process.
