- Intensive English:Forging Your English to an Advanced Level in Australia
-
Experience in the classes and town made me more eager to learn English, especially speaking, because I realized my too poor ability of speaking English compared with native level one. There were many things to learn in conversation with non-native speakers.
Not only English but also I could practice being open and talk to others. My mind became more and more global during the program. Those students in ANUC had willingness to speak in English, even though their English skills are much poorer than mine. I
could learn those attitude from them. However, every time I talked with native speaker, I had difficulty in communication. I had to say ‘Pardon me?’ many times and every time I said the phrase, I noticed their disappointment. Those are sad memories. I
knew my level was far from native before departure, but just knew, and I did not realize the fact. I could think of my level and necessity of practicing English again(HS II 2nd).

- Robocon!:Basic robotics amid a multicultural academic environment in Malaysia
-
Robocon class was the first-time large-scale activity for me to conduct in cooperation with foreign people in English. I was also not familiar with programing and a lot of trouble occurred to our robot, so sometimes I felt it was difficult but we managed
to overcome the problem one by one and finally completed the task. Through this activity, I could foster the relationship with my teammates. It was a bit hard but very exciting experience for me. I think this experiment will owe me more confidence when
I do something international in the future.
Additionally, UTM students took us to various places after class and on weekends. We could experience a lot of local foods and culture. We had the precious experience which we cannot experience only by Japanese students. By sharing a lot of time and experience with UTM students, we could get to know more deeply about each other and each other`s country and culture.
When we do international task in the future, not every co-worker will be as kind, friendly, interested in Japan as UTM students so it will not so go well as this course. However, I believe we can perform better with this experience than without this experience, so I would like to make good use of this experience and the friendship we made at Malaysia in the future. I think I spent fulfilling two weeks.Photo with Malaysian students

Hungary
- Focus on Water:Hungary as a Land of Water
-
Most of the lectures in the course dealt with water scientifically. I didn’t take many scientific classes in the University of Tokyo, so this was a good opportunity to get new knowledge and perspectives of science. There were many topics about the global water issues. I had heard about them but I hadn’t understood them deeply.
In the lectures, I learned the details of facts, causes, expectations and solutions of the problem scientifically. Sometimes the lectures were too difficult for me so I researched about them in the reflective journals and understand them. The scientific knowledge is necessary to understand the global issues better, so this course was also good chance to enrich my understanding of the global climate change and water issues. All lectures were very interesting and especially one of the interesting topics was the groundwater contamination. I thought that there was little contamination in Japan because the technology to prevent pollution was developed and there enough regulations were arranged. However, I researched more about the situation of the groundwater contamination and found the fact that the groundwater contamination was one of the big problems in Japan. I was surprised and felt the problem closer to me. Most of the topics were related to Hungary or the global situation but I was able to relate them to Japan by researching more about them. In Japan, I learned about the situation in Japan and whole world. However, in this course, I learned about water in Hungary and whole world, so I was able to compare the same topic in Hungary, Japan and the whole world.
I also got skills in making presentation. In the first presentation, I just memorized and spoke the script. I couldn’t talk to the audience and make them feel my enthusiasm. After the presentation, I discussed with other students what the good presentation is and what we should do for our presentations. One of the ideas for me was looking at the audience. Before this course, I had tried presentation only twice. I got nervous in front of the audience and often gazed at the screen, so I decided to try to look at the audience in the second presentation.
For my second presentation, of course I made, memorized the script and practiced speaking with intonation to pass my enthusiasm to the audience. Though I got a little nervous in the second presentation I presented better than the first one. In addition to that, I referred to opinions by students after the first presentation and tried to explain Japanese history clearly and simply because most of Hungarian students were not familiar to Japanese history. And one of the members in the first presentation used the good pictures in the slides, so I tried to make good use of pictures in the second presentation.
Germany
- Bonn German Summer School
-
Until this exchange programme, I had never been abroad, so this was my first visit overseas. It had only been a short while since I started learning German, so I was quite nervous and had many doubts, especially because I was surrounded by many students
who had grown up speaking German. Despite having to rely on English and listening skills a lot, the two weeks were much more fulfilling than I had expected.
When I first signed up for this programme and saw that there were lessons every morning on the schedule, I thought it would be endless studying for the entire programme. However, the lessons were actually really fun. The teacher on the programme taught all of the classes only speaking in German, and it was extremely difficult at times, having German explained to you in German! However, it was an active and practical way to learn, and stimulating for the rest of the students in the class. Also, the class where we had to interview people in the streets of Bonn took a lot of courage for me to take part in, but feeling the joy of being understood by local people was something you can only experience by actually going to the locality where the language you are learning is spoken.
Personally, because it was my first time abroad, I learnt a great deal. Through this programme, my motivation to continue learning German and English increased dramatically, and I was able to see many new things with my own eyes. I also made strong connections with the other members of the programme, and I had such a happy and fulfilling experience that I did not want the two weeks to come to an end.
Although I do not normally write a diary, I wrote down everything that happened over the two weeks of the programme in great detail. I never want to forget this experience of a lifetime.

Seoul National University Short-term Summer Programme Report
Author Yuri Hayakawa
Department Faculty of Liberal Arts, 2nd Year
This summer, I took part in a twenty day exchange programme at Seoul National University. We had four hours of language classes in the morning, lead by three teachers from the language education institute. The classes were pretty much aligned with the textbooks, started with a quiz each time, and involved role plays and partner work.
Upon returing home, I am still in touch with the people I became close to during the programme. Among them, there are some who became much more interested in Japan through this exchange and told me that they want to come and visit one day. Being there allowed me to experience firsthand the culture and atmosphere of the country, as well as the warmth of the Korean people, which also furthered my own interest in Korea. Although there is still a lot I do not know, and have not seen, I would like to return to Korea in the near future to deepen my understanding of the country and make more connections with Korean people.
The ability to gain a newfound love for Korea, and Korean friends, crossing beyond national borders and nationality is an irreplaceable experience which I was able to have through this international exchange programme.
