6.Japanese Language Education

7.Tuition and Fees
In accordance with the memorandum on student exchange, exchange students will not be charged for examination fees, admission fees and tuition fees.8.University Housing
Exchange students may apply for university housing arranged by UTokyo. However, because of the limited number of facilities, university housing may not be guaranteed.Further information about university housing is available on the following website:

9.Entry into Japan (eligibility to reside in Japan)
All students are required to obtain a ‟student” visa to study at a Japanese university. After the applications have been approved, the International Research and Cooperation Office will provide information about the process for obtaining a Certificate of Eligibility (COE). Students will then need to take the COE and other required documents to the nearest Japanese Embassy or Consulate to obtain a Student Visa.10.Application Procedures and Deadlines
Exchange students need to be nominated by their home universities. Please contact the office responsible for student exchange at your home university and check the application procedures and documents necessary for the exchange programs to study or to research at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences/College of Arts and Sciences of UTokyo.Application documents

- Study plan or research proposal
- Two letters of recommendation (signed by a professor at your home university)
- Official academic transcript (issued within the last three months) from your university or other institution of higher learning attended
* If the transcript is issued in a language other than English, it must be accompanied by an English translation - Certificate of Enrollment (issued within the last three months)
- CV
- Photocopy of passport (page with photograph and name of applicant)
- English Proficiency Certificate and/or Japanese Language Proficiency Certificate (undergraduate students only)
* For students who wish to take courses conducted in English, students will be required to submit an official certificate of English proficiency (TOEFL or IELTS) unless they attend universities where the medium of instruction is English or have graduated from high-schools where the medium of instruction is English
** For students who wish to take courses conducted in Japanese, they will also be required to submit a certificate of Japanese language proficiency - Certificate of Approval (undergraduate students only)
